$57.75 - $77.00
New/Used: Used
The second edition of Cinema for Spanish Conversation includes the same stimulating exercises and conversation materials that have made the first edition a success among students and instructors alike. The text is designed to be used in courses in which outstanding films from the Spanish-speaking world are used as springboards for classroom Spanish-language discussion. Using high-interest feature films, students hear Spanish as it is spoken in different countries and in a wide variety of situations and are encouraged to listen to and converse about the social and cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries around the world. The second edition includes a high-interest reading for each chapter; reading selections include interviews, magazine or newspaper articles, and selections from film scripts or literary pieces. Each reading is followed by an activity. These readings are optional; they can be covered in-depth if reading is one of the goals of the course. Each chapter is devoted to one movie, and contains appropriate vocabulary, cultural notes, special terms for conversation and ]composition, a focus on a specific scene for structured discussion or writing, questions for review and understanding, and quotations from directors or critics. Difficult-to-find or older films have been replaced by films of more immediate interest to students. New to this edition are: Mar?a llena eres de gracia [Maria Full of Grace], Diarios de motocicleta [The Motorcycle Diaries], and Mar adentro [The Sea Inside].

CIVIL WAR IN LOUISIANA

$32.00
New/Used: New

This comprehensive history fills an important gap in the story of the Civil War. Too often the war waged west of the Mississippi River has been given short shrift by historians and scholars, who have tended to focus their attention on the great battles east of the river. This book looks in detail at the military operations that occurred in Louisiana--most of them minor skirmishes, but some of them battles and campaigns of major importance.

The Civil War in Louisiana begins with the first talk of secession in the state and ends with the last tragic days of the war. John D. Winters describes with great fervor and detail such events as the fall of Confederate New Orleans and the burning of Alexandria. In addition to military action, Winters discusses the political, economic, and social aspects of the war in Louisiana. His accounts of battles and the men who waged them provide a fuller story of Louisiana in the Civil War than has ever before been told.

CLASSROOM ASSESSMENT (P)

$73.25
New/Used: New
Jim Popham's widely popular Classroom Assessment shows teachers how to use classroom testing skillfully and formatively to dramatically increase their teaching effectiveness and make a difference in how well students learn. As in past editions, the author pays particular attention to the instructional payoffs of well-designed classroom tests and highlights the implications of testing on teaching throughout in special But What Does This Have to Do with Teaching? sections in each chapter. Decision Time vignettes present practical classroom problems and show readers actual decisions being made. Parent Talk features describe situations in which a teacher needs to explain something about assessment to parents and show what the author would say in that situation. And a lighter tone is established with cartoons to which readers can relate. The new Eighth Edition highlights the increasing importance of educational assessment in an era of common core state standards and teacher evaluations based on students' tests scores, incorporates the Standards for Educational and Psychological testing guidelines throughout relevant sections, and includes a new section on instructionally diagnostic tests to help readers evaluate the merits of commercial or locally developed diagnostic assessment.

COFFEE SHOP CONVERSATIONS: EVANGELICAL PERSPECTIVES ON CURRENT ISSUES

    product image
    $23.25
    New/Used: New
Description: There are numerous issues in the public square confronting the Western church. While there are any number of books available on each of the topics engaged in this collection of essays--just war, family planning, rest, immigration, politics, economic recession, fair trade, and health care--there is no compact guide that approaches each of these issues from an evangelical perspective. Coffee Shop Conversations does just that. The book does not aim to address each issue exhaustively; instead, it offers an evangelical approach to these topics, with the hopes that the door will be opened for further conversation. This book brings together the expertise of several evangelical scholars who are committed to serving the church through scholarship. The volume is therefore ideal for student ministry, Sunday school classes, small groups, and individuals interested in engaging the wider culture from a stance that is well reasoned and committed to biblical faith and practice. Endorsements: "Scholarly without being pedantic, helpful without being burdensome, this new work by a variety of young scholars provides discussion on a variety of needed topics. As an ethicist myself, I am always delighted to see young scholars delve into areas of needed discussion. I am excited this book has been written and that these essays might well receive a much broader audience. Of times when believers ought to be salt and light, that day is now! I commend this group for moving us from where we are to where we ought to be!" --Frank S. Page, President and Chief Executive Officer, Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee "Coffee Shop Conversations is as provocative as it is informative. The authors do not presume to offer 'definitive' answers to our generation's most pressing ethical problems, but they will certainly get us thinking. You'll disagree with some of it (I did) and you'll benefit from all of it. I can't imagine a more interesting book to use as a discussion starter with friends in any Christian setting." --Gary M. Burge, Professor of New Testament, Wheaton College and Graduate School About the Contributor(s): Russell L. Meek is an adjunct instructor and doctoral student at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also serves as the associate editor for Journal for the Evangelical Study of the Old Testament and is an assistant book review editor for Journal of Hebrew Scriptures. N. Blake Hearson is an associate professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has served as a pastor of small groups at two churches and has been a member of the faculty at Columbia Evangelical Seminary.
